FAR-SEEING ACTION BY TAURANGA RATEPAYERS IN 1911

Reference to the far-seeing policy of ratepayers in the Tauranga county in 1911 in making provision for finance to carry out a bridge replacement programme, was made by the County Clerk (Mr E. M. at a meeting- of ratepayers in the Maketu riding in the Pukehina Hall to discuss tv>e loan proposal. In 1911, stated the county clerk, ratepayers voted on whether they would have a bridge rate or not, and an affirmative answer was given at the poll. A farthing in the £ bridge rate was passed by the then council It laid dormant for some years, and todav the council could put its hands on £30.000. So far, the council had raised £l4 000 of the £30,000 for urgent bridge work in the county. In the Maketu area the new ferro-concrete Waikokonu bridge on the Old Coach Road had been constructed out of the moriey made available and three other similar bridges had been completed. The Tauranga county had in sight today the whole of its bridge replacement policy without having to to the ratepayers agqin for finance. This fortunate position was due to far-seeeing action taken in 1911. t
