Area Used By Mount 5000 Club

Domain Board Approves Fencing

Controlling Crowds At

Carnivals

A request from the Mount 5000 Club to fence three sides of the area in front of Mount Drury, which the club laid out in grass and the use of which was granted for carnivals during the holiday period, was received at the meeting of the Mount Maunganui Domain Board. The object of fencing the area is to enable the club to control the crowd at its carnival functions.

Mr A. McFarlanc asked if the granting of the request would imply that the area was controlled by the 5000 Club, and the chairman explained that, the Commissioner of Crown Lands had granted the use of the ground to the club when it was first formed. The area was controlled by the Domain Board, he said, but the club had the use of it for its junctions. The Commissioner had asked the board to co-operate and give the club every assistance.

Mr A. E. Page: Is the public to be charged entrance into the enclosed area.

Mr Page said he thougnt the Domain Board meetings were rather prone to agree with what the' 5000 Club asked, but the chairman said there was no doubt that the club fulfilled a useful purpose. It did provide entertainment for the visitors—the only attractions at the Mount for their entertainment. Previouslv the ground had been a sandhill, he stated, and the Commissioner had asked the Domain Board to give the club every assistance. The public had the use of the area practically all the time and it was appreciated by the picnickers. Mr Page:' I have noticed before that when matters dealing with the 5000 Club come before the Domain Board, the members of the club on the board appear to dominate the discussions.

Mr Newton: I take objection to that remark. I certainly am not tied to the 5000 Club and would not approve what I thought was notcorrect.

The chairman pointed out to Mr Page that so far, only one member of the 5000 Club had said anything about the request. Mr Page himself had had far more to say.

Mr McFarlane: I consider the club has earned the privilege of the use of the ground which it has prepared. He supported the fence proposal. Alter further discussion the council agreed to the area being fenced with a wire-netting fence, provided that the club, when erecting the fence, left an opening on the beach frontage, so that access to the beach could be obtained across the grassed area.
