BOULDER WITH A HISTORY
For nearly 60 years a boulder has lain outside the Magistrate's Court at Christchurch. its history almost forgotten with the Dassa?" of time. It came from the hill above Lyttelton, and was an exhibit, used in evidence in a case heard in the court. Now it is almost hidden by a variegated shrub. After a voyage from England, snrne of the ship's company of a sailing ship in Lvttelton harbour ■found their shore legs by climbing the hill above the town one afternoon. Either accidentally or by intent, the boulder, which measures three feet by four feet and about two feet through, was dislodged. It careered down the hill, and smashed jnto the gasometer, causing an explosion and a fire. A signalman at the signal station saw the episode and reported it. The sailors were gathered in, and the court case followed. The boulder was carted to Christchurch in a dray, to be used as evidc-nce. It was rolled into court bv the constable, and. when it was being rolled out again after the hearing, one of the floorboards is said to have split.
