Future Use Of Old Bowling Green
Mt. Maunganui Domain Property
No Decision Yet Made
By Board
The Mount Maunganui Domain Board has not yet decided to what use the old bowling green at the foot of the mountain will be put, now that the bowling club has transferred to the new greens at Coronation Park. Official advice that the club no longer required the use of the old green, was received at the meeting of the board this week. Mr C. H. Clarke said that several persons had suggested that the old green, with its very pleasant surroundings, would make an ideal place where visitors could have lunch and picnic. Letters suggesting this had also appeared in the Press. He suggested that tables could be placed under the trees and the area maintained by the board which had a duty to the public. The chairman, Mr S. F. Newton, said he thought there was a possibility of a croquet club being started at Mount Maunganui. No sports body or other organisation had so far applied for the use of the area, he said, but he thought it quite likely that an application would be received. He would not like to see the area revert to camping grounds. Mr McFarlane: It would bring in about.£loo a year as camp sites, but I don't think the board should be too hungry for reevnue. The area would be ideal for a reserve where visitors could have their lunch. 1 The board made no decision as to what the area should be used for, but the chairman said he felt that a croquet club might still apply for use of the ground.
