SEWAGE DISPOSAL AT LOWER HUTT
RAPID GROWTH PRESENTS
PROBLEM
The extraordinarily vapid growtn of Lower Hutt hrs nresented the newly-formed Drainage Board there with something of a problem. When Str'ie housing commence:! at Lower Hutt the Housing Department built a sewage holding tank which, though not fitted for that purpose, has used as a septic tank. The deficiency in this tank is that no means were provided for the periodic discharge of the sludge The consequence is that the tank has filled and, at the present time, mors or less raw sewage is overflowing into Wellington Harbour and is beina' deposited along the foreshore. This is creating a nuisance and may provide a henUh menace. The Hutt Valley Drainage Board is fully alive to the position and its engineering staff in at present engaged in installing sewage pumps which will remove the innocuous sludge and enable the holding tank to function as a septic tank until such time as the board is able to inaugurate a major scheme for sewage disposal.
