Political Power 0f Pensioners
May Upset 15 Scats At • Next Election (P.A.) Whangarei, April 22 "Pensioners have the power to upset 15 seats at the next general election and they arc prepared to use it," said Mr M. J. Scally, a member of the Dominion Executive of the New Zealand Pensioners' Association, at a meeting of the Whangarei branch yesterday. He was reporting on the recent conference of the association, at which a move was made to change the name of the body to the Old Folks' Association.
"Adoption of this proposal would have meant that we would have had to admit/ people with plenty of money who didn't have the interests of pensioners at heart. Some people with an income of £7, £8 or £9 a week nevertheless draw 10/- a week for each child, while we get a miserable £2 5/- a week and cannot get even lOd more. <: Yet we are the people who built New Zealand up to its present prosperity. We have not lost the power Co enjoy life, but we do not want people to entertain us out of pity. "We have the right not to die and be dragged from some old age home or clearing-house to a pauper's grave, but to close out- eyes for the last time in the company of our loved ones."
