BIG GUM-TREE FELLED

WELL-KNOWN LANDMARK IN CAMERON ROAD

Interest in tree-felling operations at the corner of Hunter Street and Cameron Road ran high late on Thursday afternoon, when people returning home from work and those living on the vicinity gathered to gaze apprehensively at a gang of labourers busily engaged in bringing to a close the life of a giant gum tree. The heavy base of the tree was sawn in such a manner as to ensure that it should fall into Nicholson Field. The ranks of the onlookers were swelled steadily towards ■ six p.m. and those w,ho stayed to watch the final phase of the operation of removing this well-known landmark, were rewarded with .an imposing spectacle as the great tree, severed at last from its base, lurched and crashed to the ground to the accompaniment of children's gleeful screams.
