RESIDENTS SEEK IMPROVED APPEARANCE REQUEST TO CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
(Times Correspondent) "Petitions are not worth the paper they arc written on," stated Mr A, McFarlane, president of the Mount Maunganui Chamber of Commerce, when, at its meeting this week, a member raised the question of street tidiness on behalf of several residents in the borough. The member asked if the chamber should make representations on this issue, or whether the complainants should send a petition direct to the Mount Maunganui Borough Council. The president stated that he had never yet experienced an instance where a petition brought any results but he' was reminded by the first speaker of a case where a petition to the Mount Maunganui Borough Council, of which Mr McFarlane was a member, had brought . immediate results and the work requested was attended to very promptly. The chamber took no action, the president expressing the view that < a request to the council's foreman would probably result in an improvement. Mr Aked considered that the ' council should be asked to cover the vehicle used for refuse collection in the borough. On. windy days,; he pointed out, it was a common sight to see papers blowing all over the main street after collection. When Mr McFarlane stated that ; this question would be discussed atthe next meeting of the borough;: council, no further action was considered necessary by the chamber.
