PROVIDING TYPES OF COAL

THREE SAMPLING TEAMS AT WORK '! (P.A.) Invercargill. Dec, 22 “We are gradually getting away from the idea of just selling coal as coal, and are now able to tell industrial coal consumers what sort cf coal they need to suit their boilers,” said Mr R. W. Willett, officer in charge of the coal division of the Geological Survey in Wellington, who is visiting Invercargill.

Mr Willett said the division now had three sampling teams, which took 500 samples from coal mines in a year. The samples taken at each mine were tested in Wellington for ash content, moisture, heating value, and sulphur content. The result was that an industrial consumer who needed a certain type of coal could be supplied with it.
