GOTHIC CATHEDRAL RESTORED

IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY IN VIENNA NAZI DEVASTATION MADE GOOD London, Dec. 19. In Viepna the great Gothic cathedral of’ St. Stephens was opened today by the Roman Catholic Primate of Austria. The cathedral was heavily damaged by fire during the German retreat from Vienna, three and a-half years ago.

Since, then, a Vienna correspondent says, hundreds of workmen have been engaged on restoring the vast nave. The ruined choir and the chancel have been walled up. The Cardinal read a message from the Pope, during today’s service, which was attended by the Austrian President and members of the Government, as well as by Allied high commissioners and the diplomatic corps. Church bells were rung throughout Vienna and vast crowds thronged the streets and squares around the cathedral to hear the service which was relayed by loud-speakers. When it was all over, arc lights floodlit the whole building, and masses of people started to file through the cathedral singing hymns.
