GOVERNMENT ARMIES REFORM
NEW DEFENCE LINES
Nanking Calm In Face Of Danger
Communists Consolidate Near Peiping
London, Dec. 19
The retreating Government armies in central China are reforming around their new defence lines, 30 miles from Nanking.
Correspondents point out that these positions, which are by the River Yangtse, are all that bar the Communist advance to the capital. They say, however, that Nanking is calm.
People are still leaving for the South, but there is none of the panic which followed the Communist victories of four weeks ago. Those who are remaining are carrying on much as usual, market prices have stopped fluctuating wildly, and Government departments are no longer burning files and documents. In North China, the Communists continue to tighten their grip on Peiping, Tientsin, 70 miles away, and its port, now the last Government escape route to the coast. Chinese roving units are reported to have reached the port.
