NO RICE FOR NEW ZEALAND

MAY BE SHORTAGE FOR SEVERAL YEARS

It may be several years before rice is available to the general public in New Zealand. A special study of world rice production, made by the United Nations, reveals that there will not bo enough rice in the Asiatic countries until about 1952. In many Oriental countries the ration per head is one-third of pre-war, having dropped from about 15oz to soz a day. The shortage of rice has altered the diet habits of the Asiatic peoples, and some may have changed to substitute foods permanently. It is possible, therefore, that supply will catch up with demand in those countries before the quantities available reach pre-war levels.
