TAURANGA RESIDENT’S RECOLLECTIONS

Toiiay the people of Canada will celebrate the Slst anniversary of the foundation of that Dominion, which came into beingon July 1, 1867, following- the passing- of the British North America /let.

The Hon. E. C. Robbins, of Tauranga, then a boy of eleven, was living in Nova Scotia at the time (he Dominion was proclaimed, and stilt retains very clear recollections of the excitement which prevailed, and the intense opposition to the proposal which existed in some quarters. By the act mentioned above the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada (Ontario and Quebec), Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick were united under the title of the Dominion of Canada, and provision was made for the admission at any subsequest period of other provinces. Manitoba joined the Dominion in 1870, British Colombia in 1871, Prince Edward Island two years later, and Albert and Saskatchewan in 1835.
