WINTER GOLF SEASON
FIRST COMPETITION DECIDED
Play On Tauranga
Links
Fine Performance By
F. Ward
(By "Bunker") Play, was conducted under showery conditions on the Tauranga Golf Club's links last Saturday when the first competition of the new season was decided. Despite the unfavourable day, however, several players rose superior to the rain and returned good cards. Leading place goes to Fred Ward with a very meritorious 74 gross, a feature of which was birdies for the first four holes. This is an unprecedented feat on the course which may not be accomplished again for many years. Even with Ward's great effort his card of all square was beaten by Toby Green, another "mudlark," *on the count-back. Davidson, two down, went very well until the last three holes, while Bartlett, Castell, Hare and Merrington were all three down.
Robertson was an easy winner in the junior grade. He recorded his best effort on the course and should be heard of again. Bob Cairns opened the season we'll. His lefthanded putting was working smoothly and materially assisted him in his card of all square, which just beat Hart and Don Mackay one down for second place, while Hodgman two down and Searell threcc down were the next best. Several "firm-track" players are expected to show up better next weekTomorrow's event will be a stableforcl bogey event in two grades —senior up to and including 15 and junior 16 and upwards to 24, inclusive. Players may choose their own partners and play at any time during the clay.
