IMPROVING MOUNT LINKS

WORK ON THREE NEW FAIRWAYS

GOOD CARDS ON FIRST DAY'S PLAY

(Times Correspondent)

Competitions for the new season started at the Mount Maunganui Golf Club last week-end when a combined junior and senior medal round was played. Despite the torrential rains which fell en the Saturday, the fairways and greens recovered from their drenching remarkably quickly, and were in excellent order for Sunday's play. Some splendid cards were recorded. S. R. Handley and D. Simmonds off handicaps of 26 and 16 respectively, returned net scores of 72. Handley won on the count back. . Since the opening day, steady improvements have been made in the course, the tees having been concreted in, and v/ork continued on the second, seventeenth and eighteenth fairways. The greens committee hopes to lay out two temporary greens and so have twelve holes ready for play almost immediately while the permanent greens are being consolidated.' Advice has been received that the new triplex and power mowers which have been on order for some time, have now arrived, and further improvement in both greens and fairways is anticipated when they are put into use.
