STATE OF CORONATION PIER
FUTURE WORK IN HARBOUR Provision Of Additional Facilities Needs On Tauranga Waterfront “The state of Coronation Pier caused the Tauranga Harbour Board considerable concern fo v some time past, and various schemes foi i enewing the pier, or providing some alternative facilities for ferrv passengers or for other people who use the pier, have been under consideration,” said the secretary of the Tauranga Harbour Board (Mr W J Walker) when replying to a question concerning the present condition of the .structure.
Developments were likely in the harbour for overseas shipping and the futui eof Coronation Pier was concerned with these developments added the secretary. Until a decision was reached with regard to the major work the board was unable to decide what should be done to Coronation Pier.
In the meantime, he continued, in view of the serious deterioration in the structure, the board felt it was advisable to draw the attention of the public to the fact that the structure was unsafe. Oh the other hand, it was quite possible that it might stand and be serviceable for some time to come.
However, immediately the present investigation of the ‘harbour has been completed and it was known what work was required, the future development of the waterfront along the Strand could be considered. concluded Mr Walker.
The question of extending the Strand embankment out to near the channel to provide berthage for vessels and parking space for motorvehicles, has been considered in the past.
