WASHOUT BLOCKS RAILWAY LINE

TRAFFIC ON GISBORNE-WAIROA LINK HELD UP (P.A.) • Gisborne, April 4. A 60ft length of rails between two tunnels on the Gisborne-Wairoa section of the East Coast railway line was left hanging over 40ft above the ground when a filling was washed out yesterday morning. As the gap will require bridging, engineers estimate that it will be Thursday before the line is fit for the resumption of traffic. The scene of the wash-out js at the northern end of the Tikiwhata tunndl. Exceptionally heavy rain fell in the area during Friday night and yesterday morning, nearly sgin being recorded in 24 hours. Flood waters brought down heavy boulders and brushwood, which blocked the entrance to a culvert, resulting in the filling being washed away. Mr K. Simmers, district civil engineer of the Railway Department, inspected the damage today, and decided on the construction of a temporary bridge across the gap.
