SECOND WIN FOE TAURANGA

CORNWELL CUP CONTEST

Five Races Now Sailed

Local Crew's Fine

Showing

(P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 1(3. The Tauranga representatives, RayBailey and B. Hartley, bv winning the fifth race for the Cornwell Cup at Paremata this aliernoon now require only one more win to gain the: cup. Unplaced since its win in the first race on Wednesday, the Tauranga crew today beat Whangarci by lmin 205., with the consistent Otago crew 24s astern in third place. From a bad start in-eighth position, Tauranga quickly worked up to the head of the fleet on the first round of the three-lap windward and leeward course, and held its lead until the finish. The Wanganui crew's yacht, Mercury, carried away the top of her mast in the second lap and was forced to withdraw when in fifth place. Torrential rain during the first part of the race and continual showers throughout made sailing conditions extremely. unpleasant. After an exciting contest between the young Picton crew and the New Plymouth pair, the northern representatives outsailed their challengers and secured a well-deserved win in the fourth race, held this morning. The two boats were together for the greater part of the race. Sailing for the first time in the Cornwell Cup contest, Picton made a good showing for a time, but was eventually outmanoeuvred by New Plymouth. A feature of the race was the 40 minifte calm during which the boats lay idle on the glassy water. Results of the two races held today were: Fourth race (start 10.40 a.m.) — New Plymouth (B. Slyfield and W. Thomson), T2h 29m 455, 1; Picton 21s, 2; Otago (J. Kibblewhite and B. 215,2; Otago (J. Kibblewhite and B. Vivian), 12h 39mTOs, 3; Plimmerton (H. Dodson and P. Jobson), 12h 39m 395, 4.
