(P.A.)
Masterton, Jan. 15
The world record price of 900 guineas for a Southdown ram, Kohatu 143, bred by Mr R. M. Perry, of Masterton, was paid by Dalgety and Company. Palmerston North, as agents for K. Dalziell and Sons, Manawatu, at the Wairarapa stud breeders' annual sale at Solway today. Mr Perry's first run of five Southdowns obtained an average of 513 guineas, which is also claimed as a world record. In the Southdown section 28 of 32 entries were sold for an average of about 228 guineas, and the Romney average was 209 guineas. Of 109 Romney entries, 3fi pens were sold for a total of £7755. Of the overall offering of 133 pens 644 were sold. 59 were passed in and 10 were withdrawn. Though the average was good on account of high individual sales, a great many breeders were disappointed.
