SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTE
WELLINGTON WATERFRONT DISMISSALS
NO REPORT OR DECISION ISSUED
(P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 14. The dispute which arose over the dismissal of more than 100 waterside workers from overseas ships in Wellington was settled today. Officials of the Wellington branch of the Waterside Workers' Union and of the New Zealand Waterside Employers' Federation conferred with the Waterfront Industry Commission, which was presided over by Judge Dalglish, who said tonight that at this stage no report or decision would be issued by the commission.
It is understood, however, thol ;.i decision was reached. The union officials will report to the monthly stop-work meeting of members tomorrow morning and will ask the men to return to normal work. Between 100 and 120 watersiders were dismissed at the end of the afternoon on Tuesday on the ground that they had left work ahead of the finishing time. Three overseas ships, the Glenpark, Empire Star and Ottawa Valley, were affected and there were a few dismissals from other ships. The union representatives asked for the reinstatement of the men and took the matter to a meeting of the port committee, from which it was referred to the Waterfront Industry Commission.
No work was done on the Glenpark and Ottawa Valley this morning. There was only one gang on the Empire Star.
