(Times Correspondent) Prompted by a bather's narrow escape from drowning at the goii links beach, Mount Maunganui, recently, a team of surfmen from the Mount Maunganui Surf and saving Club visited the area and gave a demonstration using both reel and line and the surf ski A loudspeaker was installed and the club captain (Mr T. Magee) gave an interesting address to ' those present on the methods of life saving, resuscitation and care of the patient. , ... Aporeciation of the visit was shown by the residents present who collected the sum of £l3 14s to be expended in the purchase of lifesaving apparatus for this beach. There was a large attendance ot the public at a combined demonstration of both girls' and mens lifesaving teams at Oceanside Beach recently. The president of the club (Mr J. W. Sycamore) addressed the gathering on the aim of the club, to have the most up-to-date apparatus and highly-trained personnel. He stressed that drowning accidents over the holiday period, exceeded deaths on the road. Mr Sycamore said that the club had been collecting money with the object of building a watching station and gymnasium on the beach and purchasing new equipment. He pointed out the high cost of this equipment, such as a line £9, a canvas safety belt £3 3s, a reel £22 and a surf ski £2O. A collection taken at the demonstration resulted in a sum of over £22 being ■ handed to the club. ~ ... _. The club reports that Mr W. H. Knutsford was rescued and revived by artificial resuscitation on New Year's Day. His was an advanced case of exhaustion, but he revived sufficiently after twenty minutes treatment to be removed to hospital. As an appreciation of the work done by the club members in the rescue, the guests of Oceanside Hotel contributed the sum of £7 6s 6d to the club funds.
