STEPPING UP STEEL SUPPLIES

INCREASE FOR INDUSTRY

Farm Machinery Output

Considered

Shipbuilding Requirements

Reduced

London, Jan. 12. The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Stafford Cripps, has spoken about British prospects of steel supplies this year. He told a news conference that the Government was bringing in a new system of steel allocation, and that some manufacturers would get more than last year. Those making farm machinery would get a substantial increase and so will the railways, coal mines and power stations. In consequence of these new allocations other users will have to get less. Supplies to the shipbuilding industries will be cut by a fifth, but Sir Stafford added that Bx-itain’s mercantile marine must be built up and maintained since shipping had always been one of the most paying ways of obtaining foreign currency. Sir Stafford said that about 1,000,000 tons of steel would have to be exported.
