FUTURE OF TAURANGA HARBOUR
EXPORT TRADE IN TIMBER Most Convenient Outlet Expenditure Warranted On Development . The prospects of a large export trade in timber being handled through the port of Tauranga in the near future, were discussed at the monthly meeting of the Tauranga branch of Federated Farmers (Auckland Province). It was pointed out that the most convenient outlet for the vast quantities of afforested timber in the Rotorua-Taupo area was Tauranga and the Government’s view was in favour of the use of this port rather than that of Auckland. The planted areas were, rapidly increasing and provision would have to be made in the ten-year plan for a road and rail service to bring the timber to the Tauranga port, which was workable by comparatively large vessels. The ships would travel to Australia where there was a big demand for softwoods. A very suitable loading site, it was explained, could be found at Mount Maunganui where there was a depth of water at low tide of 25 feet. Vessels entering the harbour, however, would have to come in at high tide owing to the present depth of the channel.
It was considered that the expenditure of a considerable sum on harbour development by the Marine Department would be well warranted.
