AMERICAN POLICE JOINED i ORGANISATION UNDERCOVER OPERATORS York, May 20. The World-Telegram, in a copyright report, says that during the war the Nbav York Police Department “planted” 28 detectives and police women in the Communist Party. This began in 1939, when Russia Avas on friendly terms Avith Germany. The police did not make any arrests, but aimed at learning the inside Avorking and plans of the party and keeping track of its leaders and members. “Undercover men,” the neAvspaper says, “worked at the Communist Party headquarters, Avrote for the Communist newspaper, . the Daily Worker, became Communist branch organisers, represented the party at conventions, and led Communist rallies. One detective Avon such a high degree of trust in the party that it sent him as a courier to Portugal, Avhere he delivered a secret message to the International Comintern agent in Lisbon.” . ToAvard ,the end the Communists discovered the police background of most of the undercover operators and expelled them from the party. Hoav the party became aware of the police operatiqns is still a mystery.
