RARE FORM OF BUTTERFLY

DISCOVERY IN TAURANGA A rarity in the form of a very large butterfly was recently noticed by a Tauranga resident. ' Identified as 'Hypolimnas-Bolina, the butterfly was seen on a lacebark tree near the Tauranga railway station. It was described as being as big, if not bigger, than a Monarch, very deep blue in colour with two white spots on each wing. The natural home is said to be the tropics of the Pacific, West Pacific and the East Coast of Australia.

Although not entirely unknown in New Zealand, it is extremely rare, some 10 years having elapsed since one was last reported as having been seen in Tauranga. An authority on the isubject stated that although it was possible for the butterfly to have been bred here, it was equally possible that it was borne here on winds from the tropics or'on some ship.
