ALLIED COMMANDER'S

HOPES

NEW YEAR POSSIBILITY

London, Dec. 29

In a New Year's message to forces in Italy the supreme Allied Commander in the Mediterranean, , General Sir William Morgan, said it is confidently expected and hoped that British and American forces will completely evacuate Italy during the coming year.

General Morgan said that it had been necessary to keep r n Allied garrison in Italy until the United Nations settled the peace treaty. He added that he hoped the goodwill and patience shown bv both sides would be maintained. He had no other wish than to leave Italy as soon as conditions would permit and allow the people to work out their own destiny.
