STREET APPEAL
SUPPORT FOR "CHILDHAVEN"
COLLECTION NEXT FRIDAY
On Friday next there is to be a street appeal on behalf of "Childhaven," the Borough Council having granted a request for a collection.
The work of "Childhaven," that of caring for unmarried mothers and their babies who are in need of shelter and help, is conducted by the New Zealand Council of Christian Women, with Mrs Alexander Hodge as tfte honorary superintendent, and there is an outstanding record' of achievement since the home was officially opened in March 19 45 by Her Excellency, Lady Newall. Up to July 1946, 176 babies had been provided for and 79 mothers helped and given shelter. Calls on the home have been many during the past few months, and many requests for admission have had to be refused. The cost of maintenance of "Childhaven" -is considerable, and with the exception of a promised Government grant there is no permanent source of income. A part of the work with special appeal is that of the successful adoption ot the babies, and stories are legion of the work accomplished in this direction with happy results.
Anyone desirous of helping with the collection should get into touch with the Mayoress (Mrs Wilkinson) or Mrs Connor.
