A RECORD SEASON
WINTER BOWLING POPULAR Tauranga Club's Activities Lack Of Playing Areas The popularity of winter bowling in Tauranga is clearly evidenced in a summary of the Tauranga Bowling Club's 1946 winter season. The season just ended was a record one for the club both from the point of view of the number of visiting bowlers who took part and also from the financial aspect —a record number of wet days also being experienced. From June 4 to September 27, inclusive, play took place on 69 days and there were 30 days on which there was no play owing to the excessive wet winter. In June, exclusive of Sundays, there were 10 wet days, July four, August 10 and September six and the average number of players per day during the winter was 40.. An increasing, number of visiting bowlers, in particular, players from the South Island and Wellington, where winter- bowls cannot be enjoyed, came to Tauranga last season. The concensus of opinion among these visiting bowlers is that if accommodation were more easily obtainable, more visitors would be attracted to Tauranga to stay for longer periods. The Tauranga club, on the other hand, is at present concerned at the need for additional greens to cope with the increasing membership and outside visitors, and considers that the more visitors it can accommodate, the better it is for the town and business community generally as bowlers from outside the district spend lengthy periods in Tauranga.
