TO LEAVE BEFORE CHRISTMAS
BRITISH TROOPS FOR ITALY REPLY TO COMPLAINTS, London, Dec. 22. The War Office cites the length of service without home leave of the New Zealand troops, now waiting for repatriation from Italy, in reply to complaints that British troops for Italy will miss their Christmas at home because the liner Orion is leaving Liverpool on December 22. The Orion is scheduled to pick up New Zealanders in Italy after disembarking the British troops. “The New Zealand troops have not even had home leave since 1040,” states the War Office. ‘‘They have been through Greece, Crete and the major Middle East campaigns. The British troops have already had leave and they are not entitled to extra Christmas leave. The Orion is carrying 2000 British artillerymen, engineers and signallers, many of whom complain that they have had no Christmas at home since 1020.
