The following is a summary of the latest war news: — OPERATIONS IN BURMA In central Burma Allied airborne troops are now in an area 60 miles north of Mandalay. Yesterday's communique from Admiral Mountbatten says that Allied medium bombers have been attacking enemy communications in support of ground positions in the Yen, Shwedo and t Mawlu areas. It is the first news that Allied airborne troops are in the Shwedo ami. The town of Shwedo is about 60 miles north-west of Mandalay ami Yeu is SO miles farther north. The whole area stretches across a network of roads, railways and canals and is considered of vital importance to the Japanese sending- supplies to their troops fighting in the north. This'is the second landing disclosed in the last few days. The first is reported to have come down 'hie east of Implial between Chindwin and the Irrawaddy Rivers and joined up by the original airborne force led by Major-Genei-al Winfate.
On the liulo-Buvntese front our ♦roops have captured an important hill north-east of the Tmphal Plain. We now hokl the whole of •lie plain but fighting continues in the nearby hills.
