FIGHTING IN NEW BRITAIN
AMERICANS CONTINUE ADVANCE Increasing Allied Air Power Japanese Attacks on Araw : e Falling Off London, Dec. 20. American invasion forces in New Britain are continuing their advance from the village of Umtingalu and are now near the disused air strip at Arawe, about six miles from their original landing place. Japanese air attacks on the Arawe are falling off in face of increasing Allied air power. Allied aircraft yesterday made a round sweep of some 300 miles from Cape Gloucester to Rabaul. Over Rabaul Allied fighters from the Solomons shot down six Japanese planes. Two of our planes did not get back. In New Guinea the Australians have put an end to Japanese resistance across the Vitiaz Strait near to the mouth of the Sanga River. They are now' pushing on farther northward from this point. On Bougainville Island in the Solomons the Americans are getting good artillery support in their eastward advance through the jungle.
