FIGHTING IN NEW GFINE.I London, August 17. In the New Guinea area the United' States forces have now driven the>. Japanese right off Roosevelt Ridge. This gives the Americans possession of a most commanding position’ in the Salamaua area. The ridge was taken after one of the heaviest artillery bombardments; yet made in the. whole south-west Pacific area. When 35 eneniy dive bombers were attacked by Allied aircraft over the Japanese base at Lae 12 .of them were shot down. We lost one fighter.
