NEW FISH TYPE
A SPECIES OF TUNNY
Some time ago three specimens of a small type of tunny were taken off the coast at Timaru, Kaiapoi and Akaroa respectively. One of these fish was preserved and sent to Dr. D. L. Serventy, of the Australian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, who has now reported that the fish is a completely hew type. Prominently displayed in the Canterbury Museum is a cast of this new type of tunny, which is small, being about 3ft. long, and is distinguished by its very short pair of front fins. In this it differs from the albacore tunny, which has long fins. An appeal is being made by Professor E. Percival, and the acting-director of the Canterbury Museum, for any fishermen landing a similar tunny, to send it at once to the museum for examination.
