SOLOMONS BATTLE

HEAVY AIR RAIDS Enemy Bases Plastered Fighting on Guadalcanar London, Oct. 18. In the south-west Pacific large numbers of Allied planes from General MacArthur's command are trying to relieve the Japanese pressure on the U.S. forces at Guadalcanar. The Japanese bases are being heavily bombed and also enemy communications and troop concentrations in various places.

A large Japanese transport off Shortland Island . received a direct hit. The enemy bases at Bouin and Buka on Boungainville Island were heavily bombed and 15 tons of bombs were dropped on the main Japanese base at Rabaul in New Britain.

At Buka very heavy damage was done and eight large fires were left burning. Many aircraft were destroyed on the ground. News is still awaited of the main battle on Guadalcanar but it is known that fighting is very heavy and that strong Japanese reinforcements are on the way to help the large number of Japanese already on the island.

Washington says heavy losses must be expected, although so far as is known land fighting on a big scale on Guadalcanar has not yet developed.

The Japanese have landed some heavy guns and are pounding Henderson airfield.
