BURMA ROAD THREATENED

DESPERATE EFFORTS TO CUT ROUTE JAPANESE ADVANCE LASIIIO REPORTED TO BE IX FLAMES London, April 28. In the rough and mountainous country of north-east Burma the Japanese are making desperate efforts to cut the Burma Road before the rainy season, which is shortly due, commences. A Chunking message states that the Japanese are now only SO miles south-east of Lashio T he southern terminus of the Burma Road.

Lashio, says the message, has been heavily bombed and is in flames. The Chinese forces are fiercely contesting the Japanese advance. They have blown up the road to Lashio and are attacking the Japanese rearguard. Further east British and Chinese forces are holding a 50-mile line from Kyang-ye to Meiktila, about 70 miles south of Mandalay.
