In a very short while he was back, and an inspection showed that the logs had been well and truly splitwith the exception of one gnarled and knotty old stump. The farmer's wife spread a generous meal, but she was a little curious. At last she said, "However did you split those logs so quickly and so easily?" "Oh," said the tramp, "I just stood beside 'em and told 'em some of Charlie Lawrence's funny stories, and they split their sides!" In the middle of the night there was a commotion in the woodshed.
