HAVE A LAUGH

AT LONG LAST A tramp stopped at the door of the farmhouse and asked for food. "If you go to the woodshed and split up the logs there, I'll give you a good meal," said the farmer's wife. In a very short while he was back, and an inspection showed that the logs had been well and truly splitwith the exception of one gnarled and knotty old stump. The farmer's wife spread a generous meal, but she was a little curious. At last she said, "However did you split those logs so quickly and so easily?" "Oh," said the tramp, "I just stood beside 'em and told 'em some of Charlie Lawrence's funny stories, and they split their sides!" In the middle of the night there was a commotion in the woodshed. When the good folk went to investigate, they found the knotty old stump had split into a thousand pieces. It was a piece of Scottish chestnut.
