PATRIOTIC SHOP

i- LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN TAKE £220

■ The Legion of Frontiersmen had a most successful day last Friday, | when, they had charge of the Patriotic Shop. From early morning, Frontiersmen, their wives, friends, and supporters were bringing in produce, cakes, and household articles which were almost as quickly disposed of by the willing helpers in the shop, j The highlight of v the day was the | surprise packets, which found a ready sale at Is. Each packet con- ■ tained goods to the value of at least Is, but some had orders for goods far exceeding this value. ■ It was most amusing to see the look of dismay on each face as a man secured a baby’s bib, or a lady a man”s’ shaving outfit, but it all added to the fun of the day, and many were, very lucky with their surprise packets. The packets were so popular that at 11.30 a.m. all were sold out and many prospective purchasers who had delayed their visit to the shop

till the afternoon were disappointed, j Several competitions were run during the day and the winners announced during the evening, the list 'being as follows:—Mrs H. P. Andergon, poultry; A. J. Davies, the sucking pig-; Mrs R. Ward, iced cake; Mrs B. Faulkner, | cord firewood; Mrs G. Jones, Easter dinner; Mrs Andy, Easter egg; Miss G. Swann, \ lamb; Mrs Newsham, J lamb; Miss Chaffe, \ lamb; Mr F. R. Isaacs, live turkey; Miss Macmillan, pair of shoes; Miss Burford, smoker’s set; Miss Barugh, butter cooler; hamper, O. E. Lemon, Te Puke. When the competitions were closed at 7 p.m., it was found that the total in hand for the day was £216 19s, and with some more which came in-later the total is expected to be over £ 220. The competitions for the rug, dinner set, electric heater, and fire screen, will be decided next Thursday evening.
