HOLIDAY MEMORIES
VISIT TO TUNIS Miss Dobbie, who is at present living in Devonport Road, has some very interesting memories to recall from a visit to Tunis in March 1937. The trip was a holiday one to see her sisters, one of whom, Madame Vernon, lives some 80 miles inland in quite picturesque country. In the particular district there is a great deal of cropping carried on, and huge grain fields are very frequent. Hordes of sparrows .frequent the fields and the noise and din made by these small birds, Miss Dobbie says, is almost unbelievable. One of the highlights of Miss Dobbie’s stay in Tunis, was the visit of a British destroyer flotilla led by H.M.S. Hardy. The ships, which had been on patrol duty off the coast of Spain, were Hero, Hasty, Havoc, Hotspur, Hostile, Hunter, and Hyperion. There is a special interest in these destroyers just now following the battle at Narvik. Escorting the destroyers was the cruiser Galatea. With thirty other British residents Miss Dobbie attended a reception on board Hardy, Hero and Hasty, the three ships being connected by gangways. Naval officers are excellent hosts, as everyone knows, and it was a memorable afternoon. In return the British residents arranged tours and a picnic up the Bon Kornine Mountain, this being a very happy day.
Altogether Miss Dobbie spent five months in and about Tunis, and though she had no great desire to remain any longer, it Avas a holiday packed A\ r ith interest, and affording complete change.
