A PAGE FROM THE PAST TAURANGA FIFTY YEARS AGO Extracts from the Bay of Plenty Times of August 19, ISB9, read: “The football match arranged for Thursday next is between Town and Country. The Country will be represented by Messrs. Sydney, Enoka. Swainson, Tanner (3), Turner (2), R. Dowell. Mansell (3), Mathersom Brown (2), C. Kensington. G. Vercoe. Morris, and McNaughton. The Town Messrs. Haua (2 V, Robinson, Rusden, J. Jordan, Robertson, J. Allel'y. Armitage, Sunderland, Wrigley (2), Darragh (2), Farrell. Calloway, Tapper, and Crabbe. Players are requested to be on the ground at 3, o’clock sharp, to enable the match to conclude before dark. We think now that the Club has its proper uniform, its members should wear it in matches, as it does not look like business for them to play in all sorts of colours.” “A meeting of the Y.M.C. and M.I. Association was held last Thursday evening, the Rev, C. Jordan, chaiiman. There was a fair number of members present. Two new members were elected. The report of the management committee re revision of rules, was discussed and held over for future consideration. The literary business of, the evening was elocution, readings being given by Messrs. Parker, W. Chappell and Hamilton, which were duly criticised. Next Thursday’s debate will be ‘Should the Franchise be extended to ’Women?’ ”
