PROUD OF HIS ENGLISH

Sir John McLaren, who was guest speaker in Sydney recently told an amusing incident of his attempts' to speak French in Geneva. The language there, he says, is French, but everybody speaks English as well and all are more keen on perfecting their English than assisting visitors in learning French. At his hotel one day, desiring to go to the third floor, he stepped into the lift and said “Troisieme etage.” Encouraged by the fact that he arrived at the correct floor he graciously thanked the lift-driver with “Merci beaucoup” and was met with the superior response “Don’t mention it.”
