OBITUARY

REV. CANON E. R. RICE. Word has been received here of the death of the Rev. Canon Eric R. Rice, which occurred at Napier yesterday. The late Canon Rice, who was the son of the late Mr. Vincent Rice”, Secretary of the Auckland Education Board for a long period, joined the Church of England Ministry, and was in charge of the Tauranga Parish for many years. He was then appointed to St. Augustine’s Church at Napier, and during the Great War was a Padre with the New Zealand Forces. After the war he was in charge' of the Waipukurau Parish, and on account of ill-health, resigned in February last, retiring to Napier. While in Tauranga he took an interest hi sporting activities, and served for a time as President of the Rugby Union. He married Miss Adelaide Samuel, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. Samuel, of Tauranga, and is survived by Mrs. Rice, and son and daughter. Canon Rice had many-friends in Tauranga and widespread sympathy will be felt for the family in their bereavement. A service of remembrance will be held in Holy Trinity church at 7 p.m. on Sunday next. In the'Letters to the Editor on page seven, the one headed “Case for the Independent" was written by Mr H. C. Barker.
