LEATHER PRICES

FURTHER, ADVANCE MADE

Auckland, April 10

An advance in the price of leather was notified yesterday by tanners, according to a statement made by Mr J. W. Moore, President of the Auckland branch of the Footwear Association.

The new prices amount to an increase of 2Jd per lb. on light sole bends, and 2id on heavy sole bends, 13d per foot on chrome kip, lid per foot on grained chromes, and Id on ordinary chrome. On leather uppers these prices may not seem to the layman to be high, said' Mr Moore. But when it is considered that there are 21b. to 31b. of sole leather, and 3ft. of upper leather in a pair of men’s working shoes, the rise in prices mean aproximately an extra Is on factory prices. These costs must be reflected in retail rices.

Mr Moore'added that ladies’ footwear and men’s light shoes would not be affected to the same extent. According to well informed sources, leather prices are likely to rise to a higher level than at present.
