MILLS AS FARMS

MUSHROOMS OX GROUND FLOOR Idle cotton mills in Lancashire may become indoor farms if a project started by Councillor F, Horsburgh, of Preston, becomes popular. Councillor Horsburgh has taken over part of an unused mill in the; town, and is converting it to agricultural uses. The ground floor has been turned into an intensive mushroom farm, and another section is to become a poultry farm with battery cages for mass egg production. “I do not see why some of these mills, which are extremely well built, should not be turned into town farms". Councillor Horsburgh told "Reynolds.'’ “I am convinced that my mushroom and poultry venture will be successful and profitable. ’’ “A few miles from Preston a scheme to use a cotton factory for intensive pig-feeding has been started, and in conjunction with Councillor Horsburgh’s venture, a prospect of a five-storey town farm is held out — intensive tomato or other garden produce on the top floor, poultry on the third floor, pigs on the second, cows on the first and mushrooms or other vegetables on the ground floor.
