GIANT STINGRAY
FOUGHT FOR 3J HOURS. Melbourne, Jan. 13. Five anglers fought for three and a half hours in a battle with a oewt. stingray, off Stony Pier. Geelong, last night. A gaff and a spear were broken in attempts to land the stingray, which was captured after it had been stunned by an axe blow on the head when dragged beside the pier. Messrs K. Sakers. R. Kerr, R. Harrison, K. Yynch and S. Judge, who in turn assisted in holding the stingray, at the end of the 300 ft. shark line, were exhausted. Others had to assist in hauling the giant out. It measured Oft. in length, sft. in width, and almost 2ft. in thickness. An 18in. spike was in its tali.
