Requests for Hansard. Among the early requests made to Mr A. Gordon Hultquist. M.P. for Bay of Plenty, is the supply of free Hansards. As the member is only entitled to seventy-five free copies and there were ninety polling booths in the electorate at the election his difficulty in meeting all requests will be easily appreciated. Already the quota is exhausted.
Sheep-Worrying. The question of the sheep-worry-ing by dogs was discussed at the meeting of the Whakataue County Council this week and the inspector was given authority to shoot all dogs without collars and all dogs reported to be a menace to sheep.
Dogs to Post More. The Ellerslie Town Board, Auckland, has decided to increase the annual dog registration fees to the maximum alowed under the Act, 10s. An amendment that the fees be at the same rate as last year, ss, was lost, only two members supporting it. In the discussion, members stated that the main street was overrun with “droves of mongrels.” Support to the increased rate was accorded in the belief that it would assist in abating the street nuisance.
White Butterfly. The Tokoroa Rabbit Board, at its last meeting agreed that the white butterfly was this season remarkably scarce. The reason for this was presumably the release of the experimental parasite on the outskirts of Putaruru, although it was thought that the wet season might also have had some effect. It was decided that tiie matter be deferred until February, when, if the position was unchanged, a letter of congratulation would he sent to the Department of Agriculture. Members of the board wished that similar results coulu be obtained with ragwort.
Regatta at Mercer A few years ago the Waikato River at Mercer was the scene annually of a successful and picturesque regatta, when Maori canoe events, speed boat races and sculling contests were held, in addition to such attractions as the horse swimming race and Highland dancing competitions. With the depression, interest lagged and for the past three years no fixture has been held. A live club, has now revived activity, and February 29 has been chosen as the date for the next regatta. For the first time on the Waikato River at Mercer eight-oar rowing races are to take place. The Auckland Rowing Association’s championships for junior pairs and maiden double sculls are to be decided, and there is to be a ladies’ trial fours.
