Commerce Congress. A circular received by the Auckland Chamber o£ Commerce from the Federation of Chambers of the British Empire in London shows that the forthcoming congress in Wellington in October is being well advertised. The congress has met in Britain, Canada, Australia aud South Africa, but never before in New Zealand. Mad on the Movies. That the whole of England seems to have gone “mad on the movies” is the statement made by Mr C. H. Wilkie, of Napier, who is at present touring in Europe, in a letter to a Napier friend. “Several studios have been opened lately near London.” Mr Wilkie states, “and most of the London girls think that some director will spot them some day in the street and make ‘Mae Wests’ of them. So they go about in the most striking rig-outs, with the idea of making certain that the directors will not miss them. One theatre advertised for 100 beautiful girls for one show for 2 p.m. and at G a.m. there were over 1000 waiting to parade in bathing costumes.”
Sic H. Lauder as Angler. One of Sir Harry Lauder’s most abiding and grateful recollections of New Zealand is that of his success here as an angler, and in his home he keeps two trout as remembrances. Talking with a reporter of an English newspaper, he said that nowadays he spends nearly all his spare time in fishing, “I just make spring and autumn tours and for the rest of the year take life easily. You should see the two grand rainbow trout I have at home. One weighs 10 lib. and the other 911 b. They are just like salmon, and I caught them in New Zealand in the river Waikato.” This newspaper spelt the name “Waicato.”
Gold IToduction. An increase of over 5 per cent, is estimated in world gold production, excluding Russia, which does not publish official figures, for the first half of 193 5, the total of 11,751,000 oz., compared with 11,150,000 oz. for the first half of 1934. Including an estimate of 4,200,000 oz. for Russia, world production in the tvhole of 1934 was 27,400,0000 z,
