Interest Reduction on Loans ACC BSS to walmt south block The monthly meeting of i|u* Tauranga County Council was held in the Coronation Hall yesterday. Present: Messrs S. H. Ma'Doncall (Chairman), V" F. Sinclair, C. K. S. Gane. ,1. M, Darragh. A. H. Morton. C. Lully. G. jl. Mends and J. N. Blaymiros. Interest Kales. The Hem E. A. Ransom, for the prime Minister in acknow lodging receipt of letter forwarding copy of resolution passed by th** Council on the subject of interest rales, (stated: “lam [leas-d to have the expressions 0 f your Couin t! in connection with the'aclion of the Government in this respect, and have duly noted the suggestion contained in the resolution.” Bell's Road ami Drain. The Secretary of the United Tobacco Corporation Tauranga, Ltd.. Auckland, wrote acknowledging the receipt of letter regarding Bell's road and drain at Panamoa, and c-ated the Company had given instructions to have* the matter aUende(] to immediately. Tower for <'rusher Plant. Mr E. S. Brookes, contractor, wrote stating he had discussed the matter of his contract for power with the Secretary of the Power Board and believed an arrangement could he made, which would be of benefit to the Council and at the same time relieve him of his contract to the Board, on the following lines: The Council to use electric power at a low cost. where possible, in place of using benzine, etc., as is being clone at Ruahihi and other placet;, to the extent of £IOS per annum, or as near

as possible. Mr Brookes pointed out that crushing by electric power could 1 be done at a cost which could not he approached in any way with benzine or anything of the kind. Mr Benham pointed out that the Council did not own the plant at Ruahihi. Electric power was utilised at the Te Puna Quarry. It was decided to reply that the Council was not prepared to take over Mr Brookes' contract with the Power Board for the supply of electricity.

Unemployment Committee

Mr J. W. Smith, Secretary of the Tauranga Unemployment Committee, wrote in reference to the remuneration to the Secretary, and at a meeting of his Committee it was resolved that future allocations be based in the following proportions: Tauranga Borough Council, twofifths; Tauranga County Council, twofifths; Mount Maunganui Town Board, one-fifth.

The County Clerk, Mr Lewis, said the new arrangement would mean a saving to the Council. The Council adopted a motion approving of the arrangement.

Main Highways Estimates,

Mr H. Watkinson, District Engineer of the Public Works Department, wrote forwarding application forms in reference to the Main Highways Estimates for the year 1933/34. It was.stated that while ordinary maintenance should not he stopped, pending the approval of the Estimates, expenditure thereon should be limited to a rate approximately equal to the expenditure on ordinary maintenance in 1932/33. As regards construction items only a .few of the most urgent works could be considered. Mr Watkinson asked that applications be available at his office on or before April 24.

Cr Darragh moved —That a special meeting of the Council be held during the last Aveek in April to consider the question of estimates. —Seconded by Cr Gane and carried.

Harray and Carruth Roads

Mr Watkinson wrote in reference to Harray and Carruth Hoads. He asked, if the work were done with unemployed labour, what amount would the Council be prepared to And towards the cost of material and transport. The County Clerk explained that . the general rates from Mr Carruth'e properties amounted to £35 per annum. Cr Morton referred to the good work that "was being done by Mr Carruth and moved—That the Council vote £35 if the Public Works Department undertakes to do the work. The motion was seconded by Cr Lally and carried. Interest Reduction. The Acting Secretary of the Treasury. Wellington, forwarded memorandum in reference to the Local Authorities Interest Reductions and Loans Conversion Act, 1932/33. The County Clerk explained the steps taken concerning £SOO held by . the Council .in Government debentures and his action was approved. A statement, showing the savings °u various County loans, was presented by the County Clerk, Mr H. Lewis, who estimated a saving for the current yedr of £455 14s lid. ,*.!■■■ Land for a Road. The Chief Surveyor of the Department of Lands and Survey, Auckland, wrote relative to road to be taken trough portions of National Endowment Land in the Aongatete Survey District. The accompanying plan j showed a portion of National Endowment Land which for some time had s been surveyed as a road, but had never been legalised. It formed the frontage of Sections 2, of Block \l, and 9, of Block IX. Aongatete Survey District, and gives access to the souDfern end of the Wainui South Block, 'which has not yet been offered for election. The Land Board has consented to the issue of proclamation and the Council was asked to complete the endorsement on the plan as soon as possible. Mr Benham said the area was on Eadaile’s Road. Cr Gane moved — That the plan be approved and signed.—Seconded by Dr Sinclair and carried.

Transfer of Roads. A memorandum of transfer of land * n the Mount Maunganui Town District from Edward Corrigill Banks to Majesty the King, for a public road and a similar transfer from EdWa rd Cedric Banks to His Majesty tile King were submitted. The County Engineer explained that the roads had been approved by the Mount Maunganui Town Board.

Cr Lally moved —That the Council accept dedication of the roads. —Seconded by Cr Morton and carried. Hite for Building 1 . Mr F. .1. Hollis, Waihi, wrote asking permission to build a shack on the water’s edge near Harley’s Crossing, at Bowentown, at the place from which Mr Shergold had lately removed a shack, It was stated that if the site were on the foreshore the matter would be one for the Harbour Board. Cr Gane moved—-That the matter he referred to Cr Sinclair and the engineer, with power to act.—Seconded by Or Darragh and carried. Katikati Hot Springs. The Scenic Board, Katikati, submitted a verbal request for permission to erect a direction board, “To Hot Springs,” on the main highway. Cr Sinclair moved—That the request be granted.—Seconded by Cr Darragh and carried. Pish Curing. Mr I. F. Newton, Mount Maunganui, wrote regarding fish curing premises on The Mall and stated that he strongly objected to the offensive trade being carried on next to his dwelling house. It was a positive nuisance and the smoke was seriously affecting his health. The county inspector had reported to the effect that a nuisance was not created. The Council decided not to take any action. Mill Road. Messrs G. G. Crawford, S. Busby, C. S. Moulden, O. P. Coleman and R. C. J., Hunter, of Katikati, in a joint communication, wrote in reference to the metalling of Mill Road. It was suggested that a certain portion be not metalled but that metal be put on the hill at Mr Hyde’s gate. That portion was in a bad state and also required a culvert a.t the bottom. The Engineer reported that the matter was receiving attention. Rubbish on Road. Mr E. C. Fletcher, Katikati, wrote stating that soil, cut grass, garden rubbish and ironmongery had been deposited on the side of the road along the southern boundary of Section 113, Owned by him. He protested against such action and asked the Council to take steps to have the rubbish removed. It was decided that the matter be referred to the county inspector to report upon. Road at Paengaroa. Mr P. Watts, Secretary Roydon Downs, Ltd.; Hamilton, wrote drawing attention to the condition of the by-road at Paengaroa leading from the Old Coach Road to Run No. 4. The road had been rather badly cut up, and his Company would he grateful if the Council could do something .to it.

Cr Blaymires said representations regarding the road had been made to him by Mr Herbert, the manager of the property.

Cr Lally moved —That the matter be referred to the Maketu councillors and the engineer, with power to act. —Seconded by Cr Mends and carried.

Pongakawa Bush Road

Mr C. L. Luke, Chairman of the Bay of Plenty Co-operative Dairy Company, Te Puke, wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the Bush Road. Pongakawa. The cream carter had the greatest difficulty in travelling along the road, owing to the wheel tracks being worn deeply. Mr Luke asked that the road be put in order before the winter. The Chairman said the road was in a bad state. The Chairman moved —That the matter be referred to the Maketu councillors, with power to act Seconded by Cr Blaymires and carried. Natives’ Dogs. Mr A. D. Wilkins, Pongakawa, wrote stating he was having trouble in collecting the fees on natives’ dogs and asked iif the Council would supply him with ammunition so as to destroy the unregistered dogs. The matter* of replying was left in the hands of the County Clerk. Statistical Returns. The Government Statistician wrote forwarding forms for annual statistical returns for the last financial year, and also enlisting co-operation in the annual revision of population estimates. The Commissioner of Taxes forwarded form for completion giving a return of contracts let and Council employees and their emoluments. The' matter of furnishing the information was left in the hands of the Clerk.
