HOSPITAL BOARD

New X Ray Plant WILL BE SOON INSTALLED. bi-monthly meeting of the Tauranga Hospital Board 'was held in the Board’s Room at the Tauranga Hospital yesterdy. Present: Messrs F. Tanks (Chairman), H. j Clarke. W.F. Sinclair, J.A, McGhic. jl Cuff. Colin McNaughton, B. C. Bobbins. D. A. Ivory, and G. H. Mends. Section at Moturiki. Mr W. J. Baigent, Agent for the Public Trustee, wrote regarding section at Moturiki Township in the es- ' {a{e 0 f Joseph Kennedy, deceased, , an d stated that the Public Trustee at Tc Aroiia advi«ed that the Board's proposal to sell the land is Accepted by him, with the stipulation that the Trusiee way not agreeab]e to allow the Board more than twelve months to find a purchaser, or alternatively, to take title for the section. The Board will be responsible for nil rates on the section from March Jl, 19.>2. The property comprises half-an-acre. and it had been already agreed by the Board to sell the area. Oiler lor Horse. Mr A. Tutchen wrote offering £3 tor the Board’s bay mare, or, alternatively, a milch cow in exchange. Mr Robbins thought it would he better to take the money. Mr McNaughton moved —That the matter he referred to the Tauranga Committee, with power to act. — Seconded by Mr McGhie and carried. Lease Terminated. Mr W. J. Baigent, Agent of the Public Trustee, Tauranga, wrote notifying that the Estate of C. O’Driscoll will not require to continue the tenancy of the hospital paddocks at Te Puke after the end of September. Mr McGhie said Mrs Saunders was willing to rent the land at £1 per ' annum, and to top-dress it, also to allow the Board’s cow to graze on the land. Mr Clarke moved —That the matter be referred to Mr McGhie with power to act. Mr Sinclair seconded. Mr Cuff regarded the offer as a good one. The motion was carried. Te Puke Maternity Hospital. Dr R. A. Shore, for the Director- ‘ General of Health, wrote stating he would be pleased to know what was the position in regard to economies effected at the Te Puke hospital during the present financial year. The Chairman said the Department had the Board’s estimates. The Secretary (Mr Lumley) said the expenditure would be within the estimate for the half year, and it was less than the corresponding period last year. Mr Ivory moved. —That the Secretary forward the required infomation. —Seconded by Mr Mends and carried. Hospital Boards’ Association. The Hospital Boards’ Association advised that the Board’s annual subscription for 1932/33 would be £2. Mr Robbins moved—That the amount be paid.—Seconded by Mr Sinclair and carried. Stamp Duty on Interest. The Secretary reported that, the • stamp-duty on interest on loans had been allowed, the total allowance being £37 12s. Horse and Buggy. Mrs R. G. Smith wrote asking the lowest price for horse and buggy used by the nurse to natives. It was decided to reply that the horse and buggy would still be required by the nurse. Paddock at Hairiui. Mr P. H. Bruning wrote offering £2 10s per anum for paddock at Hairiai, and 15k for an old saddle, Mr Tanks said there was an old range that would be sold. It was decided to defer the letting of the paddock, ’ Mr McNaughton moved—That the matter of selling the saddle and range be referred to the Tauranga Committee with- power to act.—Secended by Mr Clarke and carried. New X-Ray Plant. Dr Watt, Director-General of Health, wrote forwarding Ministerial approval to the purchase and installation of a new X-Ray plant at the Tauranga Hospital. Mr Clarke moved —That the XRay plant be ordered at a cost of £2Bo.—Seconded by Mr Mends and carried. Quotations for Cars. Quotations for cars were forwardad by various firms, and were defer- . cd. Payment by Amwa Trust. The Secretary of the . Arawa Dis- ■ trict Fund, Rotorua, wrote forwarding cheque for £4 19s 6d for the treatment of a native patient. The total amount of the account was £lO L9s and the siim of £4 19s (id was sent in settlement. It was agreed to accept the amount in full settlement. Review of Cases. Mr McNaughton moved—That all the cases receiving financial aid from the Board be reviewed at next meeting.—Seconded by Mr Ivory and carried. Medical Superintendent’s Report. Hr J. b. Mac Diarmid, Medical Superintendent of the Tauranga HosPitai, presented the following report: In July we admitted 3S, discliarg- ■■ 34, and had 26 remaining on the 3lst. The daily average was 28. One notifiable disease (diphtheria), *as admitted. There was one death from myocarditis. frt August we admitted 32, discharged 34, and had 21 remaining °n the 31st.; the daily average was One notifiable disease (erysipelas) was admitted. There were { °nr deaths, one septicaemia, one cancer of lung, one pulmonary tuhercalosis, and one heart disease. . Ln answer to a question, Dr MacPfcrmid said that three of the persons who died were over seventy . .lears of age. .He stated that the X-Ray plant was in Auckland. Mr Ivory moved—That the medical superintendent’s report be adopSeconded by Mr Clarke and • carried. Tauranga Matron’s Report. Miss W. Bartlett, matron of the nuranga Hospital, forwarded report ‘ 0r August-September. Hi referring to the nursing staff,

the Matron stated that Miss Conlan left the hospital on September 9, and Miss Kayll took her place. Nurse Grace Mackintosh resigned on August 22 to go to India, and Nurse Barlow has taken her place. Nurse Gregory- has returned from her annual leave. Nurse Skudder is away on leave. The Municipal Band played in the grounds and the programme was much appreciated by the patients. Miss Bartlett thanked the following for gifts: Gramophone Records, Mrs Harvey; Books, Messrs Preston, W. Spratley and Inwood, and Master Tonkin; Magazines, Mesdames McKenzie and C. Hardy, Messrs Garrett, Scantlehury and Gosset; Lemons, Messrs Andrews, Steele and Gordon; Fish and Cauliflowers, Mr Tremaine; Daffodils from Flower Show, Mr D. H. L. Corrigan. Te Puke Matron’s Report. Miss E. Chappell, Matron of the Te Puke Maternity Hospital forwarded report for July, which stated that nine patients were admitted; eight discharged; two remained in hospital at the end of the month. During the month of August, thirteen patients were admitted; nine discharged; six rem'ained in hospital at the end of the month. The Secretary reported the daily averages were: July, 3.613; August 4.87. Miss Chappell acknowledged the following donations: Whitebait, Mrs Anderson: Sittings of Eggs and Fowl, Mrs Phare: Fowls, Oranges and Lemons, Mr J. S. Robertson; Mutton and Vegetables, Mrs D. Wilson; kumeras, Mrs Dalton. Messrs Conway and Carpenter have completed contract for installing new electric lights. Miss Chappell stated that nothing had been done to the drive and-the friends of patients complain of its roughness. Miss' Lambie, Registrar and Director of the Division of Nursing, paid an official visit to the hospital on August 13. , Mr McGhie referred to the question of improving the drive to the Te Puke Maternity Hospital and said he thought the Power Board should bear a portion of the cost. He understood that the Town Board was preparing an estimate of the cost of the work.

A suggestion was made that the work might he carried out under the unemployment relief scheme. Mr Sinclair moved—That the matter be referred to Mr McGhie with power to act. —Seconded by Mr Clarke and carried. Nurse to Natives. Miss D. E. Petersen, district nurse to natives, forwarded epitome of work done for the months of July and August. The total number of cases attended to was 640. Accounts. The accounts, as scheduled and presented, were passed for payment. The total was nearly £4OO. Tenders for Supplies. The Chairman said the Board had contracts for supplies to the hospital for six months, which would expire at the end of September. Mr Robbins moved—That tenders be called for the supplies of groceries, meat and bread for twelve months; that the tenders close on October 20 and be referred to a meeting of the Tauranga Committee, the latter to report to the Board on October 27.—Seconded by Mr Cuff and carried. Donation of Model Yacht. The Secretary referred to the proposal to hold an art union for the disposal of the model yacht that had been donated by Mr G. Petley, of Mount Maunganui. Mr Sinclair suggested that the proceeds of the art union be devoted to the St. John Ambulance, Association. Mr Robbins said the objective of the St. John Association was the purchase of an ambulance, v Mr Ivory favoured the suggestion that the proceeds;be for the St. John Ambulance Association and suggested that Mr Petley’s approval be sought. Mr Robbins moved —That Mr Petley be ashed to approve of the proceeds of the art union for St. John Ambulance Association, and if he consents to do so the Chairman and Secretary interview Mr F. Warner with a view to arranging for the art union.— Seconded by Mr Sinclair and carried. In Committee.
