ARMY FASHIONS.
JACKET WITH A TURN-DOWN COLLAR. What are to be the new fashions in Army dress? This Question is beginning to assume grave importance in the minds of all ranks. An official inquiry has been going on at Home since last Autumn. In January it was stated in the report on the health of the Army, drawn up by the Director-General of Army Medical Services, that suggestions for a more hygienic uniform had been handed over to the various area commands for consideration. These suggestions included: Jacket with a turn-down collar open at the neck in front; Drab Angora shirt (of tennis-shirt pattern), to be worn with a tie; Trousers in the nature of “plus fours;” and Gaiters either of danvas or soft leather. A London Daily Mail reporter was told at the War Office that the inquiry was “not nearly finished.’ “There are so many people to be consulted,” said an official, “and so many points that have to be considered. We have received a number of opinions from commands, but the work of gathering a consensus of views will have to go on for months longer.” Every detail of any proposed change of dress, he said, would have to be closely examined by the Army’s health exprts. The views of other experts would have to he obtained in regard to the durability of the new dress, and officers would be asked how, if at all, the present dress of the ordinary soldier proved irksome, interfered with efficiency, or was unsatisfactory in. any other way.
