LOCAL INDUSTRIES.

ISSUE OF PAMPHLET. The question of paying for the pamphlet, setting out the advantages which Tauranga offers for the establishment of industries, was again discussed by the Borough Council on Wednesday evening. The Mayor said it had been suggested that the Council’s share of the cost, £8 be paid from the electricity account. The pamphlets would be distributed throughout New Zealand and a number would also bo sent to the Old Country. He moved- —

That the sum of £8 be voted from the Electricity Department.—He explained that the total cost was £ls las. and (he balance would be paid by the Harbour Board and the Chamber of Commerce.

Cr Norris seconded. (T Allely contended that the motion carried at the previous meeting in regard to the question required notice for rescission. Authority had not been given by the Council. The Mayor said the matter had been held over and the Council could deal with it. Rescission was not re-

quired. Cr Wallace maintained that at the previous meeting it was decided that (he whole question bo deferred. The publication was uncalled, for and tiu, information could have been typed. He felt that the expense was not warranted, and the money was required for streets work.

Cr lies agreed with Crs Allely and "Wallace. The resolution adopted at the last meeting was that the question regarding the pamphlet was to be considered at the present meeting. Now they found that the pamphlet was printed. They wore told at. the previous meeting that the Council’s share would be £7 10s and that the balance would be paid by the Harbour Board, but were now informed the hakruce would he paid by the Harbour Board and the Chamber of Commerce. The thing had been done without the sanction of the Council, and he did not think the Council had been treated finite fairly.

Cr Whiting said tlmy were quite justified in going on with the pamphlet. Tauranga was hungering for mure industries and the pamphlet was the very thing that was required. Cr Allely said he was not against the pamphlet, but was against, the manner in whicdi it was done. They had the minute of the last meeting, which should be rescinded. The Mayor said the motion of the last meeting did not require to be rescinded l . The first meeting of the local bodies concerned in regard to publishing a pamphlet was one of urgency. Ho then advocated that the question should be referred to the bodies concerned, but he was overruled. Since the last meeting of the Council, Mr C. E. Macmillan. M.P., came back to Tauranga. He (the Mayor) then called councillors together and it was agreed that the Council would contribute. The Harbour Hoard and the Chamber of Commerce would also find a portion of the cost. The Council’s contribution was to come out of the Electricity Department, which would benefit if industries were established

The motion was put and carried by seven votes to three, Crs Wallace, Allely and lies dissenting. Crs Wallace and Allely asked that their names he recorded against the motion.
